The story of the Military Dependents’ Village may be lost forever if it is not told now. The play tells the story of how a group of people speaking different dialects and with different cultural backgrounds travel across the ocean and finally settle down in Taiwan’s Dependents’ Villages (眷村). Through the joys and trials that experienced by the different families over three generations, the great turbulent era is portrayed. Through the daily little bits and pieces, the simple and touching life story is told.

The Village is based partially on childhood stories of Taiwan’s most prominent television producer, Wang Wei-Chung. Using Wang’s stories and his personal life experiences as a foundation, acclaimed director Stan Lai has assimilated them through his special process of improvised rehearsals with the cast. Since its premiere in 2008, the play has electrified audiences throughout the Chinese speaking world, becoming one of the milestone productions of recent years. The Village is a theatrical record of a special piece of history. It is an epic and radiant celebration of life in all its tragic and comic splendour.
