This talk is a response to Zarina Muhammad’s artwork, Pragmatic Prayers for the Kala at the Threshold.

Join Dr Imran Tajudeen in this talk where he discusses the political, socio-economic and cultural histories that may be gleaned about urban and rural Singapore from cross-referencing vernacular/colloquial and official colonial place names, old European maps, and accounts and records in the Malay language. Evidence on early place names and their locations may be obtained from various sources including the 1604 map of Singapore by de Eredia; the 1614 Johor compilation Sulalatus Salatin (Sejarah Melayu), which recounts places relating to fourteenth-century Singapore; various accounts by Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi; the large number of detailed maps of Singapore across the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; and a variety of Malay records of addresses. Read chronologically and comparatively across sources and in connection with architecture, and focusing on otherwise forgotten names and cross-cultural usages, they reveal fascinating insights into our histories as a people and our relationship to the land and with each other.
