“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” - Winston Churchill

T'ang Quartet presents a tribute to the master, Ludwig van Beethoven on the 190th anniversary of his death.

In this first concert of a retrospective series of six that pays homage to Beethoven, we ask what his music mean today. And what it means for us, as the last quarter century of our lives turn, to have taken this unusual journey together.

Beethoven’s late quartets were widely considered to be his greatest and most spiritual works. Pushed to existentialist despair with his struggle against deafness, Beethoven composed the late quartets in a complete rejection of the romantic and emotional. That pathos, which served him so well, were pushed aside to make way for the introverted, and the intellectual.

Beethoven began writing not for man, but for humanity. String Quartet No. 12, Op. 127 marked the beginning of the end.

As Beethoven's late quartets heralded the end of an age, Béla Bartók's String Quartet No. 1 transformed that end into a new beginning.

But to expect Bartók on his first outing to write for humanity would be unreasonable. He wrote for man, about man. His first quartet begins in personal despair. It opens with sighs that cries of an unrequited love.

As both compositions herald ends and beginnings, T'ang Quartet celebrates a new cycle. There is no end or beginning. We move, forward - usually on a slight tangent - and we evolve and grow as we continue to celebrate the sheer joy of chamber music with you.
