The days when Selangor and Singapore would meet each other in the Malaysia Cup may be over, but it is definitely not forgotten. In total, Selangor and Singapore contested 17 Malaya Cup finals and 6 Malaysia cup finals, and the rivalry created during these passion-filled encounters had left a truly unforgettable memory for all fans. In the absence of Singapore from the M-league in 1995, it left a vacuum in the League, much to the disappointment of the fans. This was when HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the Sultan of Selangor, then the Regent of Selangor, inaugurated the Regent of Selangor’s Cup in 2001 to have these two giants of Regional football continue their great rivalry.

Besides the eagerly anticipated clash between Selangor and the Singapore Selection, the curtain raiser match between the Selangor Veterans and the Singapore Veterans is sure to take fans down the road of yesteryear.

This match between these legends themselves can hardly be called a curtain raiser as these veteran players still are the football idols to many of us. Names like Datuk M Chandran, Datuk Ghani Minhat, Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Datuk Santokh Singh, Zainal Abidin Hassan, the late Mokhtar Dahari, the late R. Arumugam and many more who donned Selangor colours and were all national players. The evergreens from Singapore include the likes of the late Dollah Kassim, Samad Allapitchay, Quah Kim Song, S Rajagopal, Fandi Ahmad, Malek Awab who are still revered in Singapore and no doubt many of the fans both from the present and past generations eagerly anticipate watching them each time they take the field.

In addition to the traditional curtain-raiser match between the Singapore Veterans and Selangor Veterans and the main match between the Singapore Selection and Selangor Selection, a ‘Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup’ Match for Under-16 boys between Singapore Sports School and Selangor Combined Schools will be held for the first time in the series.

The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup will definitely remain in the annals of Malaysian and Singapore soccer as a permanent feature and talked about for generations to come.
