From Deanna Ng’s Bidadari to Darren Soh’s For My Son, what inspires documentary photographers and photojournalists is often that which is deeply personal. While photography may continue to evolve, the impulse to photograph remains constant in coming from within. Join independent photographers Tay Kay Chin, Deanna Ng and Darren Soh as they speak on the photographic drive – what to photograph and why, intentions of the image, and the photographic medium as an agent for change.

This session takes as reference the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize 2018 finalist artworks, Museum of the Lost and He was lost yesterday and we found him today (2015) by Leung Chi Wo and Sara Wong, which bring to the fore peripheral characters of archival images through re-enactment.

Tay Kay Chin is a Singaporean photographer who works mainly in documentary and photojournalistic genres. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1992 with a degree in photojournalism, and spent more than a decade with newspapers in Singapore and the United States, working his way up from photographer to presentation editor. In 2010, he co-founded PLATFORM, a photography collective to promote photojournalism and documentary work in Singapore through regular talks, panels and presentations. Besides commercial and personal projects, he devotes his time to promoting photography, writing, consulting and lecturing.

Deanna Ng is a Singaporean photographer and educator. She was selected as an international participant for the Missouri Photo Workshop in 2006 and the experience taught her the importance of the photograph as a document of history. She was also one of the short-listed artists for the prestigious Icon de Martell Cordon Bleu Photographer of the Year Award in 2010, and was selected as one of Asian's emerging talents and profiled on Nikon's Through Asian Eyes in 2011.

Darren Soh is a Singaporean photographer with particular interest in architectural and landscape photography. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in sociology and has been a full-time photographer since 2001. Over the years, he has been placed in several international photography awards including the Commonwealth Photographic Awards, the Prix de la Photographie, Paris, and the International Photography Awards.
