About Basketball Association of Singapore

The Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) is the official organisation for basketball in Singapore. The association’s mission is to increase participation in basketball at all levels, to develop the sport to a competitive elite team sport of choice, to rejuvenate the community’s interest in the sport, and ultimately to contribute to the pride and economy of Singapore.

The Basketball Association of Singapore is responsible for the continuous development of the sport in the country since the inception of the Singapore Basketball & Volleyball Association in 1934 and the formation of the Singapore Amateur Basketball Association (SABA) in 1946. The beginnings of the association made commendable efforts to revive and heighten the popularity of the sport, reinforcing Singapore’s position as a player in the region’s basketball scene.

In 1967, SABA renamed itself to Basketball Association of Singapore, increasing its presence and participation in regional and international competitions such as the Asian Basketball Cup and Singapore Festival International Invitation Competition, now known as the Merlion Cup.

About the Merlion Cup

The Merlion Cup, organized by the Basketball Association of Singapore, is an international invitational basketball tournament in which clubs and national teams from different countries take part. The first Merlion Cup was held in 1984 at the Gay World Stadium and continued until 1996 with the exception of the 1986, 1993, and 1995 tournaments being cancelled.

Last year, the Basketball Association of Singapore decided to revive the tournament and the Merlion Cup made a successful comeback at the OCBC Arena. This year, the Merlion Cup, which is on its 11th edition this year will return again at the OCBC Arena from 20th September to 24th September where six of the best basketball clubs from the region will be featured.
