Finding Dignity, a Bharathanatyam dance theatre production which commemorates Annual World Mental Health Day, boldly ventures into the world of mental illness - a world normally smothered with prejudice and a pall of silence and shame. Seen through a mother’s lens, Finding Dignity tells the tale of a daughter’s journey with schizophrenia. As the daughter grapples with her symptoms and withdraws from friends and family, we watch the mother struggle with the complex emotions which surface before realising that treatment together with acceptance and unconditional love are crucial for her daughter's recovery.

Finding Dignity desires to challenge what it means to be “normal”, and implores us to approach mental illness with empathy and compassion. Only when we embrace the journey of recovery as a “new normal” can we come together and enable all, regardless of mental illness, to live a purposeful life; a life filled with dignity.

Conceptualised and scripted by seasoned Singapore artiste Lalitha Venketasubramanian, Finding Dignity is choreographed by internationally renowned choreographer and dancer Ajith Bhaskar Dass and enhanced with the artistic inputs of internationally acclaimed performer, Shanta Ratii. The music composition for the production has been done by highly acclaimed Indian vocalist and composer Sudha Raghuraman. The unique Tamil lyrics have been crafted by Singapore's very own senior Guru, dancer, choreographer and lyricist, V Balakrishnan. Research for the production has been facilitated by Institute of Mental Health, Singapore (IMH) with medical expertise being provided by Prof Chong Siow Ann, Assoc/Prof Swapna Verma and Asst/Prof Mythily Subramaniam of IMH.

Bringing alive the artistic vision of the production are Singapore dancers Lalitha Venketasubramanian, Devapriya Appan, Aarthi Devarajan, Aishwarya Kumar, Saradha Anantharaman and Shruthi Ramesh.

A pre-show exhibition will showcase the wonderful work of mental health organisations and others in the mental health field. A post-show panel discussion will give the audience a chance to interact with medical experts, caregivers, patients as well as the artistes for the evening and raise any and all questions pertaining to mental health.
