Between the site-specific actions and public interventions of artists in the 1970s, to the relational aesthetics of artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija in the 1990s, the way in which artists approach the visual arts has changed – moving from a focus on the object, to incorporating and making as their subject human relations and social encounters. Drawing on examples from Southeast Asia, join arts educator and arts manager, Sunitha Janamohanan in looking at the intersections of contemporary art, culture and social purpose, in order to consider why artists choose to engage with society in the way they do, and the impact of their actions.
